Should you fix or rebuild your AI-built app?
Messy code doesn't automatically mean you need to start again. A rebuild can throw away working decisions and create new bugs. Base the decision on evidence.
Fixing is usually better when
- The data model matches how the business works.
- Problems are limited to specific features, permissions or integrations.
- The app already has users you can't easily migrate.
- You can add tests around the risky areas.
A rebuild may be justified when
- The data model can't represent the business correctly.
- The same rule exists in many conflicting places.
- Each change breaks unrelated parts of the app.
- Security problems run through the whole design.
Questions to ask a developer
- Which specific parts are wrong, and why?
- What would a smaller fix cost?
- How would existing data move safely?
- What risk remains after either option?
